The Birdham Mayhead'sThis page is taken from a more complete works produced by Michael and Dee BOND Reproduced with our grateful thanks This chronicle begins with Elizabeth Mayhead the second of six children born to Abraham and Ann. She was born in Portfield, in the parish of Oving and Christened on the 1 September 1825. In the 1881 Census at the age of 15 Elizabeth already had a son, David. The address was a house in Birdham a small village not far from Oving, it is occupied by Mr. James Robinson aged 30 and his son James aged five, There is no mention of James's wife "So we can only assume she had died" Perhaps Elizabeth was a servant who went to help with James Jnr. We feel that David was James's son although we still have to confirm this. Although in the 1851 census he was called David Robinson Mayhead. James and Elizabeth were married in Birdham on the 19 September 1842. Although they went on to have more children making a total of eleven, David retained the name of Mayhead whilst his siblings were Robinson's. James was a carpenter by trade, it was said that David also enjoyed carpentry although he never followed the trade but instead worked on the land as an Agricultural laborer. In the 1871 census Elizabeth was head of the family as James must have died c1863 as the youngest child was born in 1863 "another avenue to explore" An unusual entry in the 1881 census gave there daughter Caroline's occupation as monthly nurse. I wonder if this is another name for a midwife ? For some reason we have not recorded the 1881 Census. Although they remained in Birdham they moved as a family a couple of times, in 1861 the address was 96 Parsonage, while in 1871 they had moved to 100 the Street Elizabeth : David Robinson & Juliana White : David - - Elizabeth - - Mary Jane - - Kate - - Alice - - James - - Louisa Richard - - Emily
